How does the Utility Calculator work?

The calculator to the right is based on RESIDENTIAL rates, not multi-family, commercial, or irrigation rates. Those rates can be found here.

The first 2,500 gallons of water that pass through your residential water meter are billed at a rate of $8.82 per 1,000 gallons. So, the first 2,500 gallons of water cost $22.05

The next 2,000 gallons are billed at a rate of $10.15 per 1,000 gallons. Having another 2,000 gallons pass through the water meter is another $20.30.

Gallons used above 4,500 in a month are billed at a rate of $11.16 per 1,000 gallons.

The tiered billing amounts are required by state statute (103G.291) and are to assist in water conservation efforts.

If you are on city sewer, checking the box below the calculator will include the sewer rates in your calculation. 2023 sewer rates for Hermantown are $10.66 per 1,000 gallons. This means that if you had 4,500 gallons of water pass through your water meter, it would add a sewer charge of $47.97 to your bill.

This calculator does not add in monthly services charges, the stormwater utility fee, or the state’s annual safe water testing fee. Those fees, along with hook-up charges, on-off fees, and other considerations, can be found here.

Any errors in our online calculator or the above text are not applicable to the final determination of your bill. This online calculator is a helpful service in preliminary bill calculation or breaking down previous bills; it is not, however, an official tool used in calculating actual bill amounts.
