The Hermantown Connector Trail System is a segmented, non-motorized path that connects key areas of the city, as well as Hermantown with neighboring communities and greater state-wide trail systems.

Whether hiking, biking, running, walking, pushing a stroller, or being pushed in that stroller, this trail system is meant to connect you with what you need. If that is a shortcut on your bicycle or a long walk in nature, if that is a chance to visit with friends or spend some serene time alone, if it is a training run for your next race or a trail that helps you relax, the City of Hermantown hopes you connect with whatever you are looking for on these trails.

The Hermantown Connector Trail System features several segments which lead across the city. From the Jackson Trail – which travels past some of the city’s most historic homes – to the Keene Creek sections with all their natural beauty, the total trail system will be nearly 10 miles in length when it is completed. You can also get updates and information on the trail system as each section moves closer to completion, especially regarding developments about the Recreation Initiative and its place on the November 2022 ballot by signing up for communications directly from the City here.

JACKSON TRAIL

Upon completion, the Jackson Trail segment of the Hermantown Connector Trail System will be a beautiful walk through some of the most historic sections of the City. The wonderful brick homes along this section of trail are part of the Jackson Project Homes, a federal government project from the 1930s that created the nearly 90 homes – many of which still adorn this section of planned trail today.

Additionally, the Jackson Trail will stretch to the Essentia Wellness Center and Hermantown Schools. The EWC is one of the newest community additions, providing a gathering space for so many different community members, while our school has long been a centerpiece in our community. Today, the Hermantown Schools are among the top-performing public schools in our area, helping draw families to choose our city as their hometown.

NORTH KEENE CREEK TRAIL

From the heart of Hermantown south to Keene Creek Park, this planned section of trail navigates through incredible natural beauty and wonderful residential developments. Long known as a place with a balance of natural beauty and access, while still being an incredible place to call home, the North Keene Creek Trail highlights Hermantown in those two areas.

An initial portion of the North Keene Creek Trail, leading from the park itself north to Morris Thomas Road, is set to open in 2021.

SOUTH KEENE CREEK TRAIL

The southernmost section of the Hermantown Connector Trail System is planned to stretch from Keene Creek Park to our border with Proctor. From there, the plan is that our neighboring community will continue the path through their wonderful city.

Highlighting how relationships and partnerships stretch beyond borders, the South Keene Creek Trail carries those enjoying it to Proctor and beyond – including the long-term goal of reaching the Willard Munger Trail which stretches from Duluth to Hinckley and provides access to trail systems that extend across Minnesota.

The Hermantown Connector Trail System, with all of its associated features, has received funding from a variety of sources, including the Greater Minnesota Trails and Parks Commission, the State of Minnesota, the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, St. Louis County, and the City of Hermantown.
