Hermantown Garners Environmental Grant
Hermantown, Minn. – The City of Hermantown was awarded a $50,000 grant by the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development to close out 2021. The funding comes from the Contamination Cleanup Grant Program, which awarded only eight total grants this cycle.
The grant targets a 10-acre parcel of land located on the corner of U.S. Highway 53 and Lavaque Bypass in Hermantown. The site, which formerly housed the Arrowhead Refinery, was removed from the Superfund National Priorities List (NPL) in 2021. This determination allows for greater development opportunities on the site following the NPL deletion.
“We are thankful for this grant, as it provides another step forward for new and exciting possibilities to be considered on this site,” said John Mulder, Hermantown City Administrator. “As noted by the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development when awarding Hermantown this grant; this area can be revitalized to provide job opportunities and tax base increases that will benefit our entire community.”
