City Names Appointees for Broadband Task Force

Hermantown, Minn. – The City of Hermantown named six appointees for the newly-formed Broadband Task Force at the June 21, 2021, meeting of the City Council.

Mary Ferguson, Gerald Wallace, Adhi Devireddy, Bill Berg, Thea Stauffenecker, and Steve Poggio were appointed to the task force, which will also include Gloria Nelson from the Hermantown City Council.

“More than ever we know the importance that broadband access has for people’s lives,” said John Mulder, Hermantown’s City Administrator. “I am excited and optimistic to have this talented group of people exploring ways we can expand broadband access and improve broadband capabilities in Hermantown.”

Hermantown received positive news in February when the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development announced that Mediacom would receive a grant of more than $600,000 to expand broadband access to more than 250 homes and six businesses.

“Hermantown’s City Council has placed improving broadband access as one of their top priorities looking ahead,” said Mulder. “The formation of this task force, combined with the grant from earlier this year, shows that there is action and momentum going forward.

City Asks for Day of Water Conservation

Hermantown, Minn. – The City of Hermantown’s Public Works Director has asked residents to conserve water usage for Thursday, June 10. This request aligns with work being performed by the City of Duluth on the water main that delivers all of Hermantown’s water.

Work being performed by the City of Duluth is routine, but the combination of high temperatures and extra caution has Hermantown officials requesting a day delay on lawn watering or other large-scale water uses.

“This is an extra precautionary step should there be any delays in the work being performed by Duluth,” said Paul Senst, Hermantown’s Director of Public Works. “We are fully confident that their work will be done quickly, but it is always worth additional precautions when the weather is this hot.”

There are no expected delays in water service for any residents related to this work, as public works staff were able to fill both of Hermantown’s water towers. The maintenance work being performed by the City of Duluth is slated to be completed on the same day it begins – Thursday, June 10.
